Chapter 1: The Kingdom Beneath the Sea.
|Far beneath the ocean waves|, where the water is as blue as the petals of the loveliest cornflower and as clear as the purest glass, lay the kingdom of the sea. There, the Sea King ruled over a magnificent palace built of coral and shells, its walls shimmering like pearls. He was a widower, and his mother, an old and wise sea queen, cared for his six beautiful daughters. The youngest of them was the most extraordinary—her skin as soft as a rose petal, her eyes deep and blue as the sea, |and her voice so melodious| that even the nightingales grew silent to listen.
Unlike her sisters, the youngest mermaid was quiet and thoughtful. She loved nothing more than hearing stories about the world above, where the sky stretched endlessly and the humans walked upon the land. In the garden outside the palace, each sister had a little plot of sea flowers, but the youngest princess adorned hers with statues of shipwrecked sailors and treasures from the world above. Her greatest longing was to visit the surface and gaze upon the wonders of the human world.
Mermaids were forbidden to rise above the waves until their fifteenth birthday, and as each of her sisters reached that age, they returned with tales of their adventures. They spoke of towering cities, vast forests, and brilliant sunsets that painted the sky in colors unknown to the deep. The youngest mermaid listened eagerly, dreaming of the day she, too, could swim to the surface.
Chapter 2: The Prince and the Storm.
At last, the long-awaited day arrived. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the little mermaid rose above the waves. The sea was calm, and the air was fresh and sweet. In the distance, |she spotted a grand ship| decorated with lanterns, music drifting over the waves. It was a celebration for a handsome young prince, whose dark eyes and noble demeanor captivated the little mermaid’s heart.
She watched as he laughed and danced with his guests, marveling at the joy on his face. Then, as the night deepened, |a sudden fierce storm erupted|. The sky turned black, the waves rose like mountains, and the ship was torn apart by the raging sea. The little mermaid dove through the chaos, searching desperately for the prince. At last, she found him, unconscious, sinking beneath the waves.
She cradled him in her arms, bringing him to shore just as dawn broke. Laying him on the soft sand, she gazed at his face, longing to stay beside him. But soon, the sun rose higher, |and some voices echoed nearby|. Fearing discovery, she slipped into the sea, hiding behind the rocks as a young girl from a nearby temple found the prince and helped him to safety. The little mermaid watched with sorrow as he awoke, unaware of her existence, believing the girl had saved him.
Chapter 3: The Sea Witch’s Bargain.
Tormented by her love for the prince, the little mermaid sought out the feared Sea Witch, who lived in a dark chasm where no mermaid dared to swim. "I will give you legs," the witch said, "so you may walk among humans. But in return, you must give me your voice, the most beautiful in the sea. Every step you take on land will feel like walking on sharp knives, and if the prince does not love you and marry another, you will die at dawn, |your body will dissolve into sea foam|."
Desperate, the little mermaid agreed. The witch brewed a potion and cut out the mermaid’s voice, leaving her mute. With the potion in hand, the little mermaid swam to the shore and drank it. Agonizing pain wracked her body as |her tail split into two legs|. When she awoke, the prince stood over her, marveling at the mysterious girl who had washed ashore.
Unable to speak, she followed him to his palace, where she was dressed in fine garments and treated with kindness. The prince grew fond of her, enjoying her company, though he did not recognize her as the one who had saved him. Each step she took was agony, yet she smiled through the pain, dancing gracefully for him. But his heart remained elsewhere—he longed for the girl from the temple, the one he believed had rescued him from the storm.
Chapter 4: The Heart’s Sacrifice.
The prince soon announced that he would marry the temple maiden, and the little mermaid’s heart shattered. That night, as the wedding ship sailed, her sisters rose from the sea. Their long hair was gone, given to the Sea Witch in exchange for a dagger. "If you kill the prince before sunrise," they told her, "you can return to the sea."
The little mermaid took the dagger and crept to the prince’s bedside. He slept peacefully beside his new bride, his face filled with love. Her heart ached, and tears streamed down her cheeks. But she could not harm him. Instead, |she kissed his forehead with love| and fled to the deck, casting the dagger into the waves.
As the first light of dawn touched the horizon, she felt herself dissolving, |her body turning to foam|. But instead of vanishing, she found herself rising into the sky. Light and free, the wind carried her as she joined the daughters of the air spirits who, through good deeds, could earn immortal souls. Smiling, she realized her sacrifice had not been in vain. Though she would never see the prince again, she had found a new purpose, soaring among the heavens, bringing comfort to the world below.
And so, the little mermaid became more than a fleeting shadow of the sea she became a whisper of kindness in the wind, forever watching over the ones she loved.
