Chapter 1: Jonah Runs Away.

One day God spoke to a man named Jonah. "Go to the big city of Nineveh," God said, "and tell the people to be kind and good again." But Jonah was afraid and did not want to go, so he decided to run far away in the other direction. |Jonah ran down to the| sea, hurrying along the busy docks.

At the harbor he found a wooden ship sailing far across the water. |Waves splashed against the ship| as Jonah paid the fare and climbed aboard with his small bag. Soon |the sailors rowed out to| sea, and the boat slipped away from the shore. Jonah hid below the deck and quickly fell fast asleep.

Chapter 2: The Great Storm.

While Jonah slept, God sent a mighty storm over the sea. |A wild wind howled fiercely| around the little ship, and the sky turned black as night. |Thunder crashed over the waves|, and the frightened sailors cried out and held on tightly to the ropes.

The captain woke Jonah and begged him to pray. Jonah knew the storm was his fault for running away, so he said kindly, "Throw me into the sea, and it will grow calm again." |Huge waves tossed the ship|, but as soon as Jonah slipped into the water, the wind went quiet and the sea was still.

Chapter 3: Inside the Big Fish.

Jonah did not sink down into the deep. Instead, God sent an enormous fish to keep him safe. |A great splash swallowed Jonah|, and suddenly he was sitting inside the warm, dark belly of the giant fish, dry and alive.

For three whole days Jonah stayed inside. |Tiny bubbles drifted through the| water all around him, rising slowly toward the top. In the quiet, |water dripped softly in the| dark. Jonah was sorry he had run away, so he prayed to God and thanked Him for keeping him safe. "I will go to Nineveh," he promised, "and I will do what is right."

Chapter 4: Nineveh Listens.

God told the big fish to bring Jonah back to land. With |a giant splash on the| shore, the fish set Jonah gently on the warm, sandy beach. Jonah thanked God, brushed himself off, and walked straight toward the great city of Nineveh.

When Jonah told the people God's message, the |whole crowd gasped in surprise|. They were sorry for being unkind, and they decided to be good and gentle again. God forgave them happily, and |the people of Nineveh cheered| with thankful joy. Jonah learned that it is always best to listen to God.
